Form 15G

Read Time: 5 Mins

Form 15G is a self-declaration form submitted by individuals to request non-deduction of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on certain types of income, primarily interest income, when their total taxable income for the financial year is below the basic exemption limit.

What Is Form 15G?

Form 15G allows eligible individuals to declare that their total income is not taxable, so banks or other deductors do not deduct TDS on interest earned from fixed deposits, recurring deposits, or similar sources.

Who Can Submit Form 15G?

An individual can submit Form 15G if all the following conditions are met:

  • The individual is a resident of India

  • Age is below 60 years

  • Total taxable income for the financial year is below the basic exemption limit

  • Total tax liability for the year is nil

Income Covered Under Form 15G

  • Interest from bank fixed deposits and recurring deposits

  • Interest from corporate bonds or debentures

  • Interest income from post office deposits

  • Any other income where TDS is applicable under relevant sections

When Should Form 15G Be Submitted?

Form 15G should be submitted at the beginning of the financial year or before the interest is credited, to avoid unnecessary TDS deductions.

Form 15G vs Form 15H

  • Form 15G applies to individuals below 60 years and HUFs

  • Form 15H applies to senior citizens aged 60 years and above

Why Form 15G Is Important

  • Prevents unnecessary TDS deduction

  • Improves cash flow during the year

  • Reduces the need to claim tax refunds

  • Simplifies tax compliance for low-income earners

Example

If an individual earns interest from a fixed deposit, but their total annual income is below the taxable limit, submitting Form 15G to the bank ensures that TDS is not deducted on the interest income.
