Form 15G

Read Time: 5 Mins

When someone earns interest but won’t owe tax due to low annual income, they might skip TDS. One way to do that? Filing Form 15G. This document tells the payer – like a bank – not to take out taxes at source. It works only if total earnings stay under the minimum taxable threshold. Think of it as a personal note saying, β€œI’m not hitting the bar where tax kicks in.” Used mostly for interest payments, it helps avoid unnecessary deductions. The individual fills it out themselves, confirming their status. As long as numbers fall within limits, no tax comes off at the start.

What Is Form 15G?

Some folks skip tax cuts at source by filing Form 15G – if income stays under the taxable limit. Interest from fixed deposits, recurring accounts, or alike won’t have TDS taken out when this form applies. Banks accept it only if rules are met. Eligibility matters most – no extra forms needed once confirmed. Total income must stay low enough to qualify each year.

Eligibility Criteria

A person qualifies to file Form 15G only when each of these requirements is satisfied:

  • Residential Status: Lives in India, that person calls it home. Their days unfold across cities or villages there. This place shapes how they live each moment. Home means being within its borders every single day.

  • Age: Younger than sixty years old.

  • Tax Liability: Below the threshold for tax, total earnings across the fiscal year fall short of requiring payment. Though earning occurred, the sum stays too low to trigger liability. Even with income throughout the period, no taxes apply due to minimum limits set by rules. Less than needed to be taxed, the amount remains untouched by obligation. Nothing owed in taxes for the year overall.

Income Eligible for Form 15G

  • Interest from bank fixed deposits and recurring deposits.

  • Interest from corporate bonds or debentures.

  • Interest income from post office deposits.

  • Other earnings subject to tax deduction at source as per applicable rules.

Form 15G vs. Form 15H

Submitting Form 15G early in the financial year helps skip extra TDS cuts when interest gets added. Best to hand it in ahead of time – before any credit happens – to keep things smooth.

  • Form 15G: Under age sixty? That form works for people and Hindu Undivided Families. Not meant for anyone older.

  • Form 15H: For those sixty or older, Form 15H is the one that fits. People past their sixtieth birthday find it relevant. Anyone hitting age sixty qualifies under its rules. Those in their seventies, eighties, or beyond fall into this category too. Age matters here – once you’re at or near sixty, this form comes into play.

Why Form 15G Is Important

  • Prevents Unnecessary TDS: Stopping extra TDS from being taken by mistake.

  • Improves Liquidity: Better money movement happens through the months. Flow of funds gets stronger at different times across twelve months. Cash moves more freely when needed most.

  • Reduces Administrative Effort: Fewer trips to file for money back from taxes. Getting that cash later takes less effort when you plan ahead. Less chasing paperwork each season helps too.

  • Simplifies Compliance: Simplifies tax compliance for low-income earners.

Example

Should someone earn interest from a fixed deposit yet stay under the yearly taxable income threshold, giving Form 15G to their bank stops TDS from being taken off that interest. While total earnings remain low enough, this form acts as proof they owe no tax. Since rules allow it, banks accept the declaration and skip withholding. When income stays beneath the cutoff, such filings prevent automatic deductions. Without this submission, deduction might happen even if repayment follows later.
